Restaurants and Bars

Whangarei's food scene has come a long way — from fine dining with harbour views to great Thai, Indian, Filipino and Israeli, there's something for every taste.

Whangarei's food and bar scene has grown into something genuinely impressive. Whangarei Central Holiday Park is a two-minute ride from the city centre, so you're well placed to explore. Below are our top picks.

Whangarei Town Basin

Fine Dining

TopSail

One of Whangarei's best restaurants, TopSail sits above the Onerahi Yacht Club with views over the harbour. The menu leans heavily on Northland produce and the cooking is polished — it's a Travellers' Choice award winner on TripAdvisor for good reason. Note that TopSail runs a seasonal schedule (typically Thursday–Saturday evenings), so check ahead before you go.

Tonic Restaurant

A cosy, intimate fine-diner in the heart of the city. Tonic refreshes its menu twice a year using fresh seasonal ingredients sourced as close to home as possible. Friendly, attentive service and a pleasant atmosphere make it a favourite for special occasions. Open Tuesday–Sunday from 6 pm.

Local Favourites

Split Bar & Restaurant

Split has been a Whangarei staple since 2007. Under new ownership since 2024, it continues to serve modern New Zealand cuisine — local seafood, NZ beef and lamb, complemented by good local wines. Popular with locals and travellers alike; booking ahead is recommended. Open Monday–Saturday, midday to late.

Dickens Inn

A Whangarei institution with over two decades of history. Dickens Inn is a relaxed, eclectic pub serving good food from breakfast through to dinner, with a large selection of beers, ales and wines. They run a popular quiz night on Tuesdays and regularly feature live local bands.

Local Talent Taverna

A welcome addition to the Whangarei dining scene since opening in 2023. Local Talent serves Greek and Mediterranean fare — gyros, souvlaki, kofta, and a much-talked-about bifteki cheeseburger — using local Northland suppliers. It won the Whangarei Council's Hot Grill Summer 2026 People's Choice Award and has been featured in the Cuisine Good Food Guide.

Loco Bar & Tapas

Situated right on the Town Basin waterfront with outdoor seating and harbour views, Loco is a lively option for groups. The menu runs Latin-inspired small plates — empanadas, grilled meats, seafood — alongside an extensive cocktail and sangria list. A great spot for a long, relaxed evening.

International Cuisine

Khane Bahar Indian Restaurant and Bar

The go-to destination for Indian cuisine in Whangarei and consistently one of the highest-rated restaurants in the city. Authentic traditional dishes ranging from mango lassi to malai kofta, pleasant ambience and friendly service. There's also a second Khane Bahar South Indian location in Maunu. Open daily from 4 pm.

Suk Jai Thai Restaurant

Suk Jai is one of Whangarei's most-reviewed restaurants with over 1,800 ratings — and rated 4.6/5. The authentic Thai menu earned the restaurant a Thai Select Award from the Thai Prime Minister, recognising Thai restaurants outside Thailand that serve genuine cuisine to the highest standard. Open for lunch Tuesday–Sunday and dinner every day.

Fat Camel

When it comes to Israeli and Middle Eastern food in Whangarei, Fat Camel is the place. Falafel, hummus, pita and more, prepared daily from fresh ingredients with excellent vegetarian and vegan options. One of Whangarei's most popular cafes — open 7 days, 9 am to 9 pm.

Grillah Manila

One of the few Filipino restaurants in Northland, Grillah Manila opened in 2025 and has quickly built a loyal local following. Excellent grilled skewers, adobo, and lumpia in a small, informal setting in the CBD. Also available on Delivereasy and Uber Eats.

A Northland icon at Tutukaka Marina, Schnappa Rock is well worth the 30-minute drive. Winner of Best Destination Venue at the 2025 Hospitality NZ Awards.
